In writing time we looked at the legend Rata and the Totora Tree. We looked at the key events in the story and created a story mountain. This means we made a graph and plotted the key events from the story. We thought about if they were more or less exciting than the previous event - this made our graph look like mountains. We wrote notes in our writing books to remind us of what each event in the story was. Next we expanded these ideas. Our next step was to take a photo of the story mountain we created. We added our photo to ThingLink which is a great app for sharing our learning. In ThingLink we added to our data points and recorded what was happening - we could choose to write it, say it or represent it in a picture. Once our story mountain was completed we created our own characters from the story. We used these characters to create a stop motion to retell the story. After we added sounds and voice to our stop motion we added it to the ThingLink we created. Finally we will post it to Seesaw. We will have used about ten apps to create this representation of our writing. We will share the completed story mountains as they are ready.

Sam's reading class have been reading the legend called Rata and the Totora Tree. We listened to the story here. You can read the story here. We used the app Popplet to retell the story and to describe the character. This app is fantastic because we can reorganise and resequence our ideas as we go. When the children complete their Popplet it is being uploaded to Seesaw for the children to then record their voice over to share how they completed this task. Kāhu 11 spent some time creating our own doors. We began with an art lesson and learned how to make things look 3D. We also worked hard to consider where the light was coming from in our picture and to capture this accurately. Once we had created a door we cut it out and created a world behind it. This then inspired our writing. We followed this format to write a story that had interesting language and a cliff hanger ending. An effective opening to hook and intrigue our reader. Describing the weather to set the mood. Describing the sounds we heard when realising things were not normal. Finding the portal and describing our reaction Multi sensory description after stepping in the portal. A cliff hanger ending. The stories the children wrote were fantastic and full of vivid descriptions. I really feel proud of their creative efforts so early in the year. Once the stories were written it was time to make a creative digital representation of our stories. The children had a choice of a variety of apps
Once the portal and virtual world was captured on video the children then used iMovie to add their story by voice recording or using captions. They also imported sounds from BBC Sound Effects. For many children this was their first attempt at such complex digital work - many used between 6-10 apps to create their final piece of work. The children are very proud of their work. We have spent time reflecting on our learning during this activity. We know that next time we do something that needs us to record we will think about
We are excited to see what comes next! I'll continue adding clips of the stories as they are published. Today we spent time talking about quotes that inspire us. We discussed having a growth mindset and what this means and what it looks like.
We explored some quotes and looked for key words within these and then thought about values that each quote embraced. Our next step is to produce our own growth mindset posters to inspire each other and to help form the basis of our hub expectations and culture. The discussion the children had was very mature and quite inspiring. Congratulations to the wonderful children who were selected for leadership roles that were announced today. We are so proud of you and know you will be wonderful in your role. We also congratulate those who have come away feeling disappointed - you showed courage applying for roles and you were remarkably gracious as you coped with your disappointment. We are proud of you. Tomorrow we will take photos of all of the leaders, these are a few that were taken today. This week we have written some excellent stories based on our holidays. We used an article from Stuff as our inspiration to describe a moment from our summer that highlighted what we did, where we were and what it was like there. We began by writing our wonderful stories in our writing books. We then had our first go at using the Green Screen. The Year 6 tamariki taught the Year 5 tamariki how to use the app Do Ink Green Screen to create a digital copy of their wonderful writing. Some children even added some sound effects! We have spent some time considering the successes of our digital learning and have discussed the importance of looking at the camera, knowing what we want to say and speaking in a clear voice. We also noticed it was very hard to hold the iPad still when we filmed. Mrs Warren has let us order two tripods so this will be much easier when we do our next filiming. This is a great starting point for our learning to use this tool. We will be using it again later in the term so will compare our work and see how far we have progressed. The quality of the writing was excellent, especially after such a long break. We have still got some to finish and some children forgot to airdrop their work to me so others will follow next week. Today we had lots happening with children coming and going for Sports Trials ready for Hagley Sport to start next week.
This gave us the perfect opportunity to spend the day doing lots of great art. Each Home Base worked on their own art project. In Kahu 11 we created some origami eyes - these represent the Kahu’s eyes which are powerful, strong and symbolise protection and life. We folded our eyes carefully and then added lots detail to create an eye that moves and blinks! Please return the pink Aqua Gym permission slip ASAP to the Office Drop Box.
We are still seeking Parent Help for our trip to Spencer Park next Tuesday. If you can help with this trip please let a teacher in the Hub know ASAP. Matua Mike spent some time talking to all of Kāhu on Tuesday.
He explained our school's Cultural Narrative and the story of the Kāhu bird. Now we will do some more exploring in our Hub. |
