Kåhu 9 and 13 are enjoying an AMAZING time at Wainui! The weather has been stunning, the scenery is gorgeous and the kids are having a ball! Check out some of the photos taken over the last two days of the fun being had!

We have been working hard to create a piece of art that reflected our science learning this term. We drew science beakers and placed them on a table with a vanishing point. To extend our learning we created a digital animation to show bubbles coming out of the beakers. This was made in Do Ink Animation and then moved to iMovie to add some bubbly sound effects. A big congratulations to our TOM team who placed first in the Canterbury Tournament of Minds’ competition at the weekend. The team had to solve authentic, open-ended challenges that foster creative, divergent thinking whilst developing collaborative teamwork.
It was so much fun seeing the children dressed as their favourite book characters today! Which books do you think these characters come from....
The children have been carrying out various scientific investigations this term connected to chemistry and physics.
Below some children are finding out about water resistance and how it effects objects in water. The children had to carry out an investigation to find out how water resistance can be changed by the shape of the object. They had to ensure that they carried out a fair test by only changing the shape of the object and keeping all other variables the same. In geometry the children have been learning about 2D shapes, 3D shapes, types of lines and angles. The children then to design and create a city map meeting the following criteria:
Your map must include the following features: •City name (be creative!) •City population Streets- All streets must be named •4 parallel streets (2 pairs) •2 transversal streets •2 streets that are perpendicular •2 streets that intersect to form an obtuse angle •2 streets that intersect to form an acute angle The following buildings must be placed at specific locations All buildings should be labeled •A school (cuboid) and a park next to each other at a right angle corner. •A multi-storey shopping mall (octahedron) at the intersection of an obtuse angle. •A greenhouse for growing plants(tetrahedron) at the intersection of an acute angle. •Any other buildings, parks or landscaping of your choice to make your city look complete. Extension •A police station and a movie theatre at alternate exterior angles. •An ice cream shop and a games arcade at consecutive interior angles. As part of our space topic, Kāhu 11 wrote some stories imagining they were an astronaut left behind after the first manned mission to mars.
We spent time looking at a VR clip of mars and exploring the landscape. We thought of some excellent ways to describe this and used some fantastic vocabulary in our warm up sentences - we then shared this with each other and magpied ideas from each other to use in our own final piece of writing. Next we imagined what we might include in a final transmission to our families back home - we came up with a structure to help guide our writing. Who are you? • When are you sending this message? • How you are feeling? • What happened? Why are you stranded? • How have you survived so long? • How much longer can you survive? Why? • What is your plan? • What do you want to say if this is to be your last message? We tried to have a tone to our writing that reflected our feelings. Next we spent time practising our acting skills - our focus was on PAUSE PACE PASSION After we felt confident we recored ourselves using the new Green Screen feature in iMovie. We had to import sound effects and also added a static to give the effect of poor transmission. There were a LOT of technical elements to this piece of work. Some children have not yet shared their work with me and a few were absent for the majority of this learning due to high levels of illness and holidays at the end of term. Please click on the links below to view this great learning. Please note these are screen recordings from Seesaw as we were out of time to airdrop at the end of term. Luci Havyn Miu Lachlan Tamati Kennedy Kody and Susan Poshika Megan Lily Ma Marley LOVES bugs! He has taught us all so much about them and he really wants to be an entomologist when he grows up. Sam's friend Mike is an entomologist at Lincoln University. Mike came and spoke to our hub all about bugs and then we had a great bug hunt. |
