Kāhu Term 1 Spelling Plan 2019
For spelling this year the children have been put into groups, based on a spelling assessment and their written work. Each week they will be given 6 - 8 words that follow a particular spelling pattern or rule. If your child finds the words too tricky they can try an easier list or alternatively if the words are too easy they can find more challenging words themselves that follow the same pattern or rule for that week and add them to the list. We ask that you test your child on their words on a Thursday evening and that they return their home learning book to school on a Friday. How you can help your child with spelling: This term we are focusing on the vowel sounds and the associated spelling patterns. It is really important that the children can hear the different sounds that the vowels make, for example the short ‘e’ sound in the word ‘egg’ and the long ‘e’ sound in the word ‘emu’. The short vowel sounds are usually written with just the vowel letter, whereas the long vowel sound can be written in a number of ways, such as the long ‘e’ can be written with an ‘e’, ‘ee’, ‘ea’, ‘ei’, e_e (magic e at the end) etc. For some children who find spelling more challenging practising reading the words out loud and telling you whether it is a short or long vowel sound could be beneficial, as they need to be able to identify the long vowel sounds so that they can then think about which spelling pattern might be used to write it. For those children who spelling comes easy to, it is about consolidating their knowledge of the spelling rules and patterns so that they know how to apply them to more challenging words in their writing, whilst also extending their vocabulary. We would encourage these children to find additional trickier words that follow the weekly spelling focus to learn at home. |
